UPDATES & REMINDERS

Winter Break Building & Office Checklist

As we head into winter break, please help us prepare our spaces by taking the following steps:

  • Ensure all windows are fully closed and secured.

  • Set thermostats to a moderate, energy-efficient temperature (avoiding extreme heat or cold).

  • Turn off and unplug electronics or equipment that can safely remain off during the break.

  • Clean out refrigerators and empty trash cans to help prevent pests or mold.

Title II ADA Compliance — What This Means for AREC Faculty

  • Under the DOJ’s 2024 ADA Title II rule, all UMD digital content must meet WCAG 2.1 Level A & AA standards by April 24, 2026.

    • The Italia and the administrative team is handling the majority of planning, auditing, and remediation at the department level.

    • For faculty, this is primarily about awareness and flagging questions or concerns regarding your work and Canvas Elms Courses.

  • If you have general questions, are unsure whether something applies to your materials, or want to talk through Canvas-related content, please schedule a meeting with Italia here.

AREC200 Field Trip Video just passed 12,000 views
The video highlighting our Chesapeake Bay field trip continues to gain traction and has become a strong recruitment and storytelling asset for the department.

Building the AREC Community
We’re excited to share continued momentum in AREC student enrollment. The department has welcomed eight new students into the AREC major, with four additional students currently in the process of declaring. In addition, 35 students are pursuing AREC minors, with more expected as interest continues to grow.

Maria also shared that the new major currently in development is expected to receive official approval in the coming months and will be available for recruitment beginning Spring 2026.
