This summer, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resource’s (AGNR) MomentUM Magazine reflects change and progress within the community toward healthier living systems on a global scale. While articles vary from student achievements to new research, several members of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) are recognized for their contributions to the community.
This year’s commencement speaker Cedric Nwafor was mentioned for his work with student-led organization, ROOTS Africa, that strives to combat hunger and poverty in Africa through education and innovation. In March, Nwafor and six other undergraduate students travelled to villages across Africa to host workshops on soil health, crop rotation and more. AGNR alumni Anna and Nathan Glenn, whose younger brother Brian Glenn is an undergraduate with the department and travelled with ROOTS Africa, assisted the organization and Nwafor in their international efforts.
Recent graduate Adeola Adeoye was lauded for her passion in global nutrition and creativity after a poster she made won first place in a national contest. Adeoye minored in global poverty, housed within AREC, after gaining interest in the subject from an international nutrition course she took her junior year.
In addition, the magazine shined a spotlight on several faculty and staff members of the department, including Dr. Lori Lynch for her new position as department chair.
Two faculty members were mentioned for receiving outstanding service awards: Dale Johnson, a farm management specialist within AREC, was recognized for winning the Dean Gordon Cairns Award for Distinguished Creative Work and Teaching in Agriculture. In addition, the Integrated Research & Extension Excellence Award was awarded to Dr. Jorge Holzer, an assistant professor within the department.
Jeff Cunningham, information technology guru for the department, was also acknowledged for his 30 years of service.
Congratulations to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics for all of the outstanding accomplishments this past quarter. To read the entire summer issue, go to https://agnr.umd.edu/alumni/momentum.
