AREC & AOSC to Co-Host New Research Stream in the UMD First Year Innovation & Research Experience Program

FIRE Program seeks research educator to lead new innovation & research stream

The First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) is a major initiative at the University of Maryland, College Park. FIRE provides first-year students authentic research experience, broad mentorship and institutional connections that impact academic success, personal resilience and professional development. The FIRE program is seeking an individual to serve as the Research Educator (formal title: Assistant Clinical Professor) for an innovation and research stream to begin in January 2019.

Research Educators work in collaboration with stream-affiliated faculty members to design and implement the group research agenda. Research Educators coordinate with instructional faculty to oversee research operations including student research progress, infrastructure maintenance as well as management of the fiscal budget. The position empowers the individual to develop a strong portfolio of experience in technical leadership, operational planning, curriculum development, academic instruction and mentorship and research group management.

The Research Educator will lead a new FIRE innovation and research stream focused on data science with an intended focus on economic, climate or geographic information systems-based (GIS) modeling. With respect to applied economics, we seek individuals with experience in groundwater use, agriculture, or the economics of climate change as well as proficiency in econometrics, machine learning, or other methods of data analytics. For individuals from a background in atmospheric sciences we seek experience in operational meteorology with a working knowledge and experience with various data products, gridded models, satellite observations and products, upper air and surface observations, energy forecasting, agricultural meteorology. We welcome applications from all individuals with a background in any form of data science who have the capacity to productively pursue research goals in one or more of these enumerated specializations.

The Research Educator position will be supported from January 2019 through December 2021 (3 years) contingent on positive annual reviews (each December 2019 & 2020) and available funding. The position co-reports to the Director of First-Year Research Programs in the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President as well the stream affiliated faculty members.
